Modern Foreign Languages


In grades 6 to 8, all students study either French or Spanish. Students are able to start at any level and build to an advanced level during grades 6 through 8. During this course, students develop the four language skills – namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Entry to the different Cambridge IGCSE programmes via the study of a variety of activities with topics that include: family and friends, school and education, leisure activities and hobbies, daily routine, health and holidays and tourism. Our course outlines highlight key teaching points each semester and we adapt our own material to these accordingly.

From grade 9 to 12 we offer 5 different courses:

  Cambridge IGCSE French Foreign Language and Spanish Foreign Language
  Ab Initio Spanish and French
  IB Diploma French B and Spanish B

The Cambridge IGCSE Foreign Language programme at MEF IS is a two year-course based on a curriculum in which reading, writing, speaking and listening in the target language are part of the daily learning experience. The Students are guided on improvisation and practice spontaneous oral and written communication. Students are strongly encouraged to speak in the target language. The teaching method extends beyond the textbooks, where the creativity of the teachers is highly appreciated and encouraged. The students are regularly assessed on all the linguistic components.

The IB Diploma Language ab initio French or Spanish at MEF IS is a two-year foreign language course that provide the grades 11 and 12 students with opportunities to practice and explore the language as well as to develop intercultural understanding.
The language ab initio course is organized into three themes :

   Individual and society
   Leisure and work
   Urban and rural environment


Through the development of receptive, productive and interactive skills, students should be able to respond and interact appropriately in a defined range of everyday situations.
The language ab initio course, albeit at a basic level, seeks to develop intercultural understanding and foster a concern for global issues, as well as to raise students’ awareness of their own responsibility at a local level.

The IB Diploma Language B programme at MEF IS is a two-year foreign language course designed for study at both higher and standard levels by grades 11 and 12 students with previous experience (3-5 years) of learning the language. Although the main focus is on developing linguistic skills, the study of literary texts will play an important role in this process. The aims of the Language B programme are to:

  Develop students' power of expression in both oral and written communication
  Promote the ability to respond to the language demands of transactional and social contacts
  Provide students with an efficient tool for possible further study or job opportunity
  Help students to gain insights into how users of other languages think
  Provide enjoyment and intellectual stimulation

Equal emphasis is given to developing text handling (reading comprehension), written, listening comprehension and oral skills.
