Cambridge Secondary 2 and IGCSE Examinations

HIGH SCHOOL - Grades 9 -10

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is offered worldwide in more than 10,000 schools in 160 countries and is a popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year old students. The Cambridge IGCSE follows an international curriculum that develops students' skills in creative thinking, inquiry, and problem solving and is excellent preparation for their next steps in education, including a smooth academic progression into the IB Diploma programme and onwards into higher education.

The IGCSE courses have been developed by the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) for international students and are similar to the British national GCSE qualifications. The curricula for the courses have been researched, developed and written by CIE and culminate in externally marked and moderated coursework and examinations across all subject areas at the end of the two year programme. At MEF IS, IGCSE courses are in grades 9 and 10. The programme takes into account different abilities allowing teachers to tailor competencies and decide on the most suitable level of the course and the examination for individual students. The IGCSE provides a broad study programme which offers a balanced mix of practical experience and theoretical knowledge. The Cambridge examinations are offered during May/June of every academic year. Additionally, students in Grade 9 study courses in History, PE and choose from Art, Music or Computer Science. Although these classes do not result in IGCSE qualifications, they are based on the Cambridge Curricula and are designed to better prepare students for the IB Diploma Programme.

At the end of their two year IGCSE courses, 10th Graders take examinations in English, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Language (French or Spanish), and Coordinated Science.
