Extended Essay

Programme subjects - normally one of the student's six chosen subjects for the IB diploma. It is intended to promote high-level research and writing skills, intellectual discovery and creativity. It provides students with an opportunity to engage in personal research in a topic of their own choice, under the guidance of a supervisor from the MEF Schools of Turkey IBDP Teaching Staff. The process leads to a major piece of formally presented, structured writing, in which ideas and findings are communicated in a reasoned and coherent manner, appropriate to the subject chosen. Essays range in length up to 4,000 words.

IB1 students at MEF Schools of Turkey are required to choose a subject and supervisor in October. Over the course of IB1, students are expected to research independently their topic and prepare a first draft of the extended essay by mid - May (see the IB DP Calendar link for exact deadlines). During the IB2 academic year, students produce a final draft of the extended essay that is submitted in January of IB2, though many supervisors will require its submission earlier.
